About Bushi No Te Kai Karate

We teach traditional Ryu Kyu Okinawan Karate. Our lineage traces directly back to the original masters on the island of Okinawa, globally recognised as the birthplace of karate. Unlike modern sport karate, our focus remains on the authentic, classical techniques and philosophy of the Okinawan pioneers.

Yes. While many factors influence personal safety, our Okinawan karate is specifically designed for practical self-defence. We focus on Bunkai (the real-world application of movements), ensuring that the techniques taught in class are functional and effective for protection in real-life scenarios.

Our junior karate classes start from 7 years of age. However, karate is a lifelong pursuit; we welcome adult beginners of all ages at our Kent dojos. It is never too late to start your martial arts journey.

Not at all. Most of our students start with no previous martial arts experience and varying levels of fitness. Your strength and stamina will improve naturally as you progress through our syllabus. We offer a supportive environment where you can develop at a pace that suits you.

Bushi No Te Kai currently holds regular martial arts classes at three main locations across Kent:

  • Maidstone (Allington)

  • Chatham

  • Tunbridge Wells

Kobudo is the ancient Okinawan art of traditional weapons training. Our curriculum includes the Bo, Sai, Tekko, Nunchaku, and Tonfa. Kobudo complements karate to provide a complete and classical martial arts education.

Our Combat Classes are high-energy sessions inspired by kickboxing. We use pads and gloves for a high-intensity workout that incorporates kettlebell training and HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training). It’s an excellent way to improve cardiovascular fitness, strength, and striking power.

Absolutely. We pride ourselves on offering flexible training options. You are welcome to focus solely on Combat fitness or Kobudo weapons training, or you can combine them to tailor a training schedule that meets your personal goals.

You don’t need any specialist gear for your first session. Just wear comfortable gym clothes and bring a bottle of water. For those starting Kobudo, we provide weapons for you to use until you are ready to purchase your own. We train barefoot, so no special footwear is required.
